First Bend of the Yangtze River

First Bend of the Yangtze River, China LijiangThe Yangtze River is the world's third longest river and the vein of China, flows through the center of China from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Initially the river flows southeast to the Hengduan Mountains and at about 44 miles from Lijiang, due to the strange geography of this region, the Yangtze bends toward the northeast. This bend creates gorgeous scenery of the calm Yangtze waters. The river is overlooked by large sweeping willow trees and lush green vegetation. This section of the Yangtze is famous for its peaceful and natural beauty.

This is also where the town of Stone Drum (Shigu) lies. This town dates back to the Jiaqing era (1548-1561) of the Ming dynasty when a stone drum was built as a monument for the victory of Naxi king over a Tibetan army. This ancient town was named after this 5 meter diameter and half a meter thick drum.

This town witnessed many famous historical events such as Zhuge Liang, the famous military strategist from the Three Kingdoms Period, gaining advantage over the enemy by crossing the Yangtze River. This is also where the first emperor of the Yuan Dynasty, Kublai Khan, brought his army across the river. This town has memorials to commemorate each of these significant events in history.

It is worth a trip to visit the beautiful sight of the Yangtze River bend and the historical richness of Stone Drum town.
